With All Hallows' Eve fast approaching, what better time to catch up on some of 2015's biggest and best horror flicks? Hopefully you've already read our list of awful horrors to avoid this year, and now it's time to look at the films that actually are worth your time and money. It says a lot about the state of the horror genre that the overwhelming majority of these choices are not your typical studio multiplex horror flick: they're largely straight-to-VOD releases which do the medium a huge service. And what's more? In stark contrast to our "awful" list, there's not a single sequel, reboot, remake or re-imagining to be found: it's all unique horror, whether it's a straight-laced creep-fest or an outrageously gore-soaked comedy. From romances and dramas with unexpected horror flourishes to riveting efforts that transcend their seemingly generic premises, here are 11 awesome 2015 horror movies to watch this Halloween...

11. Spring

The list kicks off with one of the year's most inventive horrors, a curious mix of sci-fi, horror and romance that's one of the better-acted films from the genre in quite some time. Lou Taylor Pucci plays a young man who heads to Italy to escape his personal strife, where he falls for a beautiful young woman (Nadia Hilker) who has a terrifying secret. The less said about the plot the better, so we'll leave it there, but Spring is a consistently surprising film, that's for sure. Yes, it's not exactly a gore-fest, but it pays uncommon attention to its characters and presents a central mystery that effortlessly maintains viewer attention to the finish line. For such a low budget film, it's also terrifically directed: helmers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead employ the use of drones to get some staggeringly impressive overhead shots without the need for a huge crew. A deeply-felt romance with horror trimmings, Spring is a fascinating, bizarre watch and unlike any other film released this year.
