Though Tim Burton's dark interpretation of the Batman comics is remembered as the watershed moment in the character's screen existence, the universe goes back decades, growing into a many armed beast with fingers in animation, big screen live action and TV. Untold numbers of artists, writers, editors, directors, crew members, and actors have worked on the various properties in the Batman franchise through the decades since its creation - and with a property so storied having stood the test of time, it's no surprise that along the way, a few key members have (very sadly) been lost. From the campy Adam West television show to the Burton films, and right up to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, a number of incredible talents who have appeared in the franchise are unfortunately no longer with us. That is not entirely surprising, given the age of the series, and the fact that certain roles (Bruce Wayne butler Alfred Pennyworth, as one very notable example) are invariably destined to go to older actors. Still, it's a great loss any time part of the family passes...
