Animation is the gift that keeps on giving. Whether its getting nostalgic over old Cartoon Network classics or enjoying a wry chuckle over Pixars patented jokes for parents theres plenty of wholesome enjoyment to be had in Toon Town. Then theres the animation that is not interested in making you reminisce about your youth; instead it seeks to challenge and offend, make you question your very existence or leave you wondering what the hell youve just seen. Adult animation is a serious art form; its not just a novelty for niche audiences and often gains critical acclaim; you need only look to Charlie Kaufmans 2015 philosophical foray into stop-motion, Anomalisa for recent proof. Of course the serious route isnt for everybody and some creatives use the medium to showcase levels of violence, sexuality and insane surrealism that are simply not possible in live action. With such a huge expanse of genres, cultures and subject matter covered by animated movies its often hard to know where to begin. But when you look hard enough, you'll find a range which will make you laugh, cry and possibly even disgust you just as much as they will delight.
