12 Awesome Animated Films For Adults

12. Heavy Metal (1981)

Let€™s kick things off with a real classic, a sci-fi fantasy epic that has all the hallmarks of a great night in: gore, bad language and plenty of nudity. With an overwrought story that plays out like a symphonic metal concept album, the audience is taken on a journey through space and time framed by the evil exploits of a green orb known as Loc-Nar. So far, so crazy. Structured in the form of an anthology, the movie is adapted from a magazine of the same name whose lewd content was seen as too good an opportunity to pass up on for the several animation studios who worked on it. Highlights include the section titled €˜Captain Sternn€™, featuring a court case gone very wrong aboard a space station and also €˜Harry Canyon€™, a riff on film noir where a no-nonsense taxi driver tries to survive a crazy two days of gangsters, damsels in distress and, of course, a deadly green spheroid. Charming countless audiences with a pulpy, so-bad-it€™s-good aesthetic, Heavy Metal has also influenced scores of animators, a notable example being Matt Stone and Trey Parker who created the South Park episode €˜Major Boobage€™ as an homage to the iconic movie.
