The summer movie season is finally grinding to a halt, and with streaming and VOD services such as Netflix putting out more content than ever before, it's safe to say that film fans have never been more spoiled for choice.

As such, however, it's easy for some movies to fall through the cracks, because of course, there are only so many hours in a day, and only so many films a human being can possibly keep up with.

With that in mind, these 12 films are well worth carving time out of your busy schedule for, and better yet, the vast majority of them are already available on home video platforms.

From shockingly great genre efforts that Netflix dropped without any marketing whatsoever, to awesome art-house offerings released during busy blockbuster periods and everything in-between, these are the low-key cult classics in the making that deserve your attention before the year is out.

"Zombie fatigue" may be in full effect for many film fans, so credit's due to directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke for crafting a unique, uncommonly smart and thoughtful entry into the genre.

With excellent cinematography and terrific performances from Martin Freeman - who gives perhaps a career-best effort - and Simone Landers, Cargo eschews self-consciously bleak apocalyptic movie cliches in favour of a more humanistic, down-to-Earth tale.

Expository dialogue is kept to an absolute minimum yet the brief hints at the wider, ravaged landscape are undeniably tantalising, while Freeman's quest as a man desperate to keep his infant daughter safe is really quite touching.

A credit to Netflix's wildly inconsistent Originals line-up, Cargo mustn't be missed, and if you're a paid-up Netflix subscriber, you can watch it right now.
