A movie or TV show can live and die on its cast. Get the casting wrong and even the greatest film in the world can fall flat on its face; but get it right and it can elevate even the most mediocre of movies to the lofty heights of the greatest seen on screen.

An audience's attention span will only tolerate so much if it can't engage with the cast of characters they've been asked to care about and so much of that comes down to the right casting. Often movie-goers will choose their next excursion based on the names attached to the film. It is one of the most crucial steps in any pre-production process and one which can benefit or hinder the film exponentially before it's even begun shooting.

The last year has brought some brilliantly unexpected castings which have captured the attention of audiences across the world; whether it be the enamour which met Joaquin's Joker, the reverence which rightly greeted a resurgent R-Patz in the Lighthouse or the uncomfortable intensity of Adam Sandler's Uncut Gems, each film meticulously cast the right actor to carry their films and they all paid off and then some.

2020 still has so much left to give and, with that, here are the 12 perfect 2020 castings we can't wait to see...

12. Ryan Reynolds - Free Guy

An exceptionally interesting premise concerning a bank-teller living within an open world video game who suddenly becomes imbued with self-awareness, Free Guy is the sort of film with so much potential that could easily fall flat in the wrong hands. Therefore the casting of perpetual charisma machine, Ryan Reynolds, to carry the film as its lead character seems a masterstroke.

Lending his almost inhuman wit to a story with so much scope and potential immediately make this film a very exciting proposition and should, at worst, elevate to worth seeing for a few laughs. At best, however, in tandem with similar comedy god, Taika Waititi, Reynolds has the ability to make this one of the great comedies of this year.

A great premise and similarly great casting has brought this movie to the fore in terms of hype this year and, if it is executed right, it has the potential to be a masterpiece of action comedy.

While that potential remains just that; there is little doubt the casting of Canada's wittiest son has inflated the clamour for this movie in 2020.
