13 Kick-Ass Horror Movies Coming In 2019
The night is dark and full of terrors. And sequels. Lots and lots of sequels.
2018 is already set for some hit releases in the horror community. With Blumhouse throwing out the latest instalment in huge franchise Insidious: The Last Key, classic haunted house scares from Winchester, and Nicholas Cage’s very own murderous pandemic Mom and Dad all out before we’ve even the end of February - there’s not doubt that horror will continue to get bigger and badder with each passing year.
As for 2017, that marked one of the most successful years for the genre, with records being smashed continuously - Get Out and It taking pride of place in the remarkable line up of films that defied both expectation and box office tradition, with the former a landmark in representative modern horror.
Past and present are all accounted for - but what about the future?
2019 is already bursting with potential. With sequels, reboots, and adaptations taking the lead for next year’s releases, it’ll be interesting to see just how well horror builds on the already strong foundations of the past few years. But spoiler: there’s plenty in the works to make another ridiculous year for scare aficionados.
13. Alien: Awakening
Yet another Alien prequel relegated to the realms of uncertainty, and rightly so after Covenant - Ridley Scott’s latest addition to the world of xenomorph mythos was originally set for release in early 2019.
Supposedly functioning as a direct sequel to Covenent, Awakening will show us what happens when the engineers return to find their planet decimated, and the fallout from that. Scott has also hinted ‘Where we go next is obvious. We're gonna actually go to the planet.’ Whichever that one is is a mystery, but we can certainly hope that it is finally the engineer homeworld.
However, with Disney and Fox merging companies, and the Alien franchise quickly flushing itself down the toilet, this date is likely to be pushed back later in the year. It should be remembered that most Alien films have had a wobble at some point - but they’ve always made it to the big screen, for better or for worse, so it’s not off the table just yet. Not if the ridiculously persistent Scott has anything at all to do with it.
