5 Weird Upcoming Movie Castings (That Could Be Amazing)

Some potentially really great performances that started as as just really?

Surprising castings for films can be something of a double-edged sword; they can both immediately pique the interest of a shocked audience but also, and just as quickly, ensure the film is completely dismissed without ever even being given the chance to justify their odd acting selections.

Some of films most impressive performances have come under the scrutiny of a world that expected them to fall flat on their faces. Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine, Cate Blanchett in I'm Not There or, even more recently, Adam Sandler's critically lauded performance in Uncut Gems have all had audiences eating their words as to their suitability for the roles they so impressively graced our screens with.

The right actor for the right part is an undeniably important element to the film-making process but what happens when the apparent 'wrong' actor for the right part was the right actor all along? An audiences lower expectations for a film based on an apparently 'off' casting can often help to elevate that same film to new heights.

These are 5 such weird (but potentially brilliant) castings for upcoming films:

5. Anthony Hopkins - 'Cus And Mike'

Hannibal Lector training Mike Tyson is admittedly a movie I think we all want to see and, strangely, it appears we'll soon get that opportunity as Anthony Hopkins has been announced for the upcoming 'Cus and Mike', which chronicles Tyson's relationship with his legendary trainer, Cus D'Amato.

Hopkins will be playing, of course, D'Amato himself and although it initially appears an odd casting choice it takes little more than a short consideration of Hopkins body of work before it begins to make all the sense in the world. Although more well know as one of the world's greatest movie villain actors; Hopkins has often proved more than capable of playing endearing and sympathetically human characters, a quality that will no doubt be required in a film about such a close relationship between one of sports most volatile characters and his famous trainer.

Hopkins is one of those rarest of actors who has earned a divine right to play whichever part he feels like, and even bears some physical similarities to 'Iron' Mikes adoptive father figure, so there should be little doubt that this casting will be a perfect fit. With Dr. Lector as his trainer, that ear-biting scene will have some more context too...
