Is 2019 the perfect year for blockbusters?

By Simon Gallagher /

Universal Pictures

it's always tempting to stand on the cliff at the start of January looking out over the vast cinematic landscape stretching out ahead of us and proclaim that THIS will be the greatest year for films ever. Yes, 2018 had some great releases, some great surprises and some great new directions, but it also had some great big stinking turkeys and a lot of disappointments. That's just the nature of the wheel of cinematic fortune. But that's now in the past and we have to look forward and honestly, this might be the best year for films ever. DAMNIT!

Seriously, though. This could legitimately be THE year for blockbusters, with Disney set to make more money than they could ever know what to do with and new chapters in franchises that have defined this generation. There are also smaller scale projects too, of course, and all-in-all, there's a lot to be excited about.

Quite what story justifies a feature-length set-up remains to be seen (and there's little in the way of actual plot information out there so far), but it's guaranteed to be well-made and well-received by its fans. And that should be justification enough, even without the pleasure of spending more time with the excellent characters.
