49. Ad Astra

Mainstream, big money sci-fi has seen a bit of a resurgence recently, with Gravity, Interstellar and The Martian attracting awards attention and if predictions are to be believed, Ad Astra will join them.

Directed by James Gray - whose Lost City Of Z might well be the most underrated movie of the decade - it stars Brad Pitt as astronaut Roy McBride, who heads into space looking for his long-lost father, who took to space 20 years earlier.

It's going to be dark and Gray says we should expect Ad Astra to feel close to Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness - so as much a journey into McBride's centre as into space - and it certainly looks an intriguing one, particularly as the wider cast includes the likes of Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones.
