Aside from giving away everything, one of the biggest complaints about movie trailers today is that come out so far in advance they're almost guaranteeing that by the time the movie arrives people will be sick of it. It's got to the point where marketing campaigns are so lengthy and intense that less obsessive members of the audience can legitimately think the film hitting after two years of build is actually a sequel. It's that oversaturated.

Now I don't think this is totally a bad thing. Nowadays a blockbuster movie is more than just a movie; it's a massive experience that begins with announcement, runs through the casting rumours, production and the conventional marketing, all culminating in the finished product (probably viewed high on caffeine at midnight). Sure, it's a shame that the films themselves are now less a part of the film discussion, but I'd be lying if it isn't fun.

That's not to say trailers aren't pushing it a little - over the past decade or so we've seen distributors increasingly trying to beat out the competition with teasers hitting well over a year before the movie hits, often before filming has even finished. Here are six of the most surprising cases.
