7 Movies That Will Probably Happen After 2018 Successes

A Nightmare On Elm Street reboot? You can thank Michael Myers for that.

Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes it look incredibly easy these days, it's very difficult to make a movie a bonafide hit.

There are so many factors involved - commercial reception, critical reception, general fan response - that when everything clicks together and produces a killer result, you can't really blame Hollywood for attempting to repeat it.

We see this effect in action constantly: surprise smash-hits like A Quiet Place getting sequels, DC trying to capture some of that Marvel magic, or the upcoming Pet Sematary remake being greenlit mere weeks after Pennywise tore up the box-office. By looking at recent movies that became huge success stories, it's often easy to predict the next wave of movies that will be made as a result of that success.

And looking back at 2018, there are several enormously successful films that will probably inspire some of these projects of their own, whether that's a direct follow-up to a popular original, a rival studio trying to mimic a specific format or style, or even a single movie that seems destined to spawn endless spinoffs and sequels.

The 2018 Success: The Nun

Despite opening to terrible reviews and a mixed fan response, The Nun has gone on to become the highest-grossing entry in the Conjuring franchise, beating out both Annabelle movies and both Conjuring movies. That’s an impressive feat, and with over $350 million in the bank, Warner Bros will undoubtedly be looking into another movie as we speak.

The Nun director Corin Hardy doesn’t currently have any movie-directing gigs lined up (his only upcoming project is a Gangs Of London TV series set for 2019), which could indicate he's preparing for a return to the franchise in the near future. Plus, producer James Wan has even discussed The Nun 2's story, telling THR "I do know where potentially, if The Nun works out, where The Nun 2 could lead to."

With a 2019 date set for Annabelle 3, and The Conjuring 3 expected in 2020 (and The Crooked Man somewhere in development, with no date set), 2021 seems like the most likely spot for The Nun 2 to land.
