9 Possible Characters Willem Dafoe Will Play In Justice League

Green Goblin becomes Martian Manhunter?

By Jacob Trowbridge /

The internet is aflutter with the news that Willem Dafoe will be appearing in the new Justice League movie. And while fans of superhero movies are no doubt rejoicing at the fact that the former Norman Osborn will be on hand to bring some gravitas to the proceedings, one thought likely ran through everyone's mind: Why are they making him a good guy?

Yes, although the exact details have yet to be announced, what we do know about Dafoe's involvement is that he's slated to be one of the good guys.

So far, Justice League has confirmed Affleck's Batman and Cavill's Superman, with Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. That still leaves plenty of options on the table for Dafoe.

And while it may be tempting for the snarky cynics to suggest that it doesn't really matter who Dafoe ends up playing because Superman will just kill him in the first act anyhow, let's hold back some of that (somewhat validated) apprehension and look at some of the more feasible possibilities for Dafoe's place in the DC Universe.

9. The Creeper

Before he became The Creeper, Jack Ryder was a go-for-the-throat news anchor in Gotham City. But after some funny business involving nanotech and stem cell research, Ryder was transformed into the yellow-skinned, self-regenerating alter ego.

His inclusion in the group could come at the behest of Batman, brought in as a fringe member of JLA in the comics and remaining on the outside with "reserve".

You have to be something of a dreamer to believe that a character as obscurely tied to the Justice League as The Creeper could ever be brought to life by such a well-known and beloved actor, especially in a movie that appears to be aiming for the highest point of mass appeal.

But what else do we have in this cold, dead world if not hope? Are we so demoralised and forlorn that we can't, if even for just a moment, imagine Zack Snyder bringing in Willem Dafoe to lurk in the shadows wearing nothing but green underwear and a red feather boa?

Besides, is there anyone better at playing a creep than Willem Dafoe? If there is, I don't want to know about it. I'd prefer to be able to sleep tonight.
