Bohemian Rhapsody Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
Rami Malek elevates a generic biopic.
Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is finally out now in UK cinemas, and the production certainly hasn't been without its controversy. This is with regard to both its content being carefully controlled by the band themselves, and the fact that the majority of it was directed by Hollywood outcast Bryan Singer.
Reviews were held until the day before release, which is rarely a good sign, and predictably, the film has opened to mixed reviews from critics.
On one hand, Bohemian Rhapsody is an enjoyable, easily digestible tribute to Queen and especially frontman Freddie Mercury, but on the other, it's an astoundingly broad film that just doesn't probe deep enough into Mercury or his bandmates.
Needless to say, most of its major awards prospects are already up in smoke, though Rami Malek will probably end up sneaking a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor as a consolation prize.
It's certainly not a bad film, but many viewers, hardcore Queen fans or not, might be left frustrated that it's not an edgier, more daring piece of biographical drama...
