Bohemian Rhapsody Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
Downs...
5. It's A Totally Safe, By-The-Numbers Biopic
Probably the biggest fear going into the film was that it would turn out to be a simple, garden variety musical biopic with little to distinguish it, and sadly that's totally the case.
This basically feels like a Wikipedia entry on Queen in movie form, a staggeringly inoffensive film designed to appeal to as wide a cross-section of audiences as possible.
It hits beat after beat with a metronomic level of predictability as the band comes together, gets famous and encounters personal woes, and finally concludes with their epic Live Aid performance.
It's not so much that Bohemian Rhapsody needed to be surprising, but there's a disappointingly workmanlike feel to the movie considering the flamboyant personality of the band and its frontman in particular.
