Casting Harry Potter TV Show Reboot

Part 1 - Casting Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone for a new generation!

By Sean Ferrick /

With Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone nearing its twentieth birthday, a fantasy reboot is almost certainly in order! There are talks of a series coming to streaming on HBO Max, which is sure to begin raising eyebrows when it comes to how it is written, who is playing who, and so on. To get ahead of the outrage, we're here to do that for them.

Recasting some of the adult characters is the easier task here as, perfect as Dame Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman were, there are huge pools of talent to pick from. It's recasting the core cast that's proven to be tricky and eye-opening at the same time. Showing you, if nothing else, just how much talent is out there at the moment.

While everyone will be wondering who we have in mind to play Harry, there are a lot of stand out parts in this film in particular. So grab your wand and feather, remember that it's leviOsa, not levioSA, and read on to see who is among the best and the brightest working in Hollywood today.

But... let's start with the adult cast first!

14. Dudley Dursley - Ferdia Shaw

Let's get this one out of the way off the bat: the Artemis Fowl movie is awful. AWFUL. It butchers the source material, it whitewashes Holly Short, it completely misjudges how to depict Artemis and Butler is not the character from the book.

And breathe.

All of that said, Ferdia Shaw is not responsible for the failings of the script. In fact, the young Irish actor delivered a fairly solid performance in the movie, even if he wasn't able to make the character as unlikeable as his literary inspiration. The surfboarding Artemis of the movie is a far cry from the computer-screen bleached digital vampire of the novels.

Shaw, who is the grandson of legendary actor Robert Shaw, needs to embody the spoiled snark of Harry's odious cousin Dudley Dursley. The fact is, Shaw has the chops to do it. Dudley is a hard role to cast and Harry Melling did a great job. Again, looking at the course of the films, there needs to be an actor in the role who can show character development.

While Dudley isn't the biggest part in the films, he is a key nemesis for Harry in his home life. He's a nasty young boy, though, oddly, he ends up as the one character in the family who out and out states he doesn't want Harry to die. Again, with the characterisation that Shaw has managed to show in his short career, he would be more than able to take this role and make it work.
