Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness: 24 WTF Moments

The wildest moments from the MCU's most WTF movie yet.

By Jack Pooley /

Hands down, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the weirdest MCU movie to date. While it's certainly far from perfect and has its fair share of issues, it's also easy to respect its commitment to off-the-wall, totally bats**t imagery and ideas, even if not everything works.

Per legendary director Sam Raimi and that multiverse-hopping conceit, this is a film absolutely jam-packed with WTF moments, cramming legitimately disturbing horror and brutal death scenes into a film that Marvel Studios is still hoping will be happily attended by the whole family (and that it surely will).

For those frustrated with the MCU's rather safe-playing style, Multiverse of Madness is a refreshing tonic, then: messy and uneven, but committing hard to being as strange and off the beaten track as possible within the confines of a four-quadrant blockbuster.

From the film's reality-warping premise to the insane cameos none of us were ready for and everything else in-between, these are the most WTF moments from the MCU's latest.

Of course, it goes without saying that MASSIVE SPOILERS will follow if you haven't seen Multiverse of Madness yet...

24. Defender Strange Has A Ponytail

The film kicks off with an action-packed sequence in which America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) and a variant of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbtch), dubbed "Defender Strange," fend off a demonic entity attempting to kidnap America and take her powers.

It's a fun scene, and Defender Strange is differentiated from the "prime" Strange through a few key facets of his appearance - namely his fancy new suit, more prominent silver streaks in his hair, and most amusingly the fact he's rocking a wicked ponytail.

I mean, why the hell not? If the MCU can't use variants to try out some different looks for its beloved superheroes, what's even the point?
