August sees the release of the next in the line of movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and as youll all know by now, having no doubt seen the second trailer its the oddest of the bunch by far. Guardians Of The Galaxy is an offbeat, spacefaring, swashbuckling comedy adventure starring a motley crew of thieves, killers and miscreants who come up against an unstoppable force of evil... the monstrous, death-worshipping Thanos, last seen in a post-credits sequence at the end of The Avengers. Its about as far away from Iron Man as Iron Man is from Darkman we think, based upon the trailer and all the TV spots and information released so far. But as an MCU offering, its going to be a part and parcel of Marvels more traditional line of superhero movies, and Easter Eggs, name-dropping and (most importantly) celebrity cameos are part of what the MCU does that makes it special. So which Marvel Universe characters might make a brief appearance here, and how might that happen? Well, as Marvels flagship cosmic concept, Guardians Of The Galaxy isnt set on our planet, but in and around the planet Xandar. The fact is, the plot might not even allow the protagonists to visit Earth. However since theres so little known about how the storys going to go, and since the premise and characters are already wackier than a vicar in a tutu, we figure weve got plenty of room to spitball here. Before we get started, we should mention how incredibly irritating it is that its impossible to see cameos from any members of the Fantastic Four or X-Mens supporting cast. Frankly, wed kill to see the Starjammers turn up opposite the Guardians for a single moment (theyre both misfit groups of space freebooters from different areas of the galaxy - itd be like that bit in Shaun Of The Dead where Shauns group of survivors bump into Yvonnes group of survivors). But Fox have the rights to those parts of the Marvel Universe, so itll never happen. Crying shame. To the list! In countdown order of how awesome itd be
