The head of the First Order, displaying the same kind of hubris Luke Skywalker had talked about earlier, wrongly believed that Kylo Ren was completely given over to the Dark Side and, in The Last Jedi's most stunning plot twist, paid for that mistake with his life.

And yet, this is the Star Wars saga, where death has never stopped anyone from appearing in a movie. Indeed, Luke Skywalker himself is returning for Episode IX despite perishing in The Last Jedi, and so too might Snoke.

The rumour mill has fired up thanks to Andy Serkis cancelling a convention due to scheduling conflicts which, while flimsy on the surface, does have a precedent after both Billy Dee Williams and Joonas Suotamo had to do similar. Add in the return of Snoke's creator, J.J. Abrams, to the director's chair, and the mixed response to him being left so unexplained in Episode VIII, and there's a basis to say he might well return, but how would it actually happen, and should it?
