MCU To Eventually Have More Female Superheroes Than Male Ones

Who run the MCU? Girls.

Next year will see the release of the first female-led solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but sooner rather than later the MCU will be dominated by women.

While the roster thus far has predominantly been male, with Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow the only female Avenger for quite some time, the balance has started to be addressed in the last couple of years, with the likes of Scarlet Witch, Valkyrie, and Shuri coming to the fore. Now, with The Wasp joining Ant-Man, then Captain Marvel coming in March and set to lead the MCU, Marvel chief Kevin Feige has spoken about the gender balance, telling Screen Rant:

"But, as the plan goes forward I think frankly we'll be ... you know, eventually I think we're going to reach a time where it's not just ... listen, it would be amazing to see all of our female characters the way we have seen ... most, never all male, but primarily male. I think we're getting to the point soon where we have so many great female characters that those are just our heroes as opposed to when are they all female, all male. It's just the Marvel heroes, more than half of which will be women."

Last year it was revealed that a number of MCU actresses, including Johansson, Brie Larson, and Tessa Thompson, had pitched the idea of an all-female team-up movie, with talk surfacing of a potential A-Force film. We know at the very least we're getting a Black Widow film and a Ms Marvel flick, but it now sounds like we'll be seeing a lot more female-centric stories too. It's good to hear Feige talk of getting to a point when the balance is so equal it's not something people talk about; Marvel aren't there yet, but at least they're on the way.
