Despite only being confirmed back in June, Doctor Strange 2 is already picking up some pace.

According to Benedict Wong, who'll be back reprising his role as Wong in the sequel, production could actually be starting as soon as this year. The news comes from Pop Goes The World, who reported Wong's comments from Fan Expo Vancouver.

There's always the chance Wong is mistaken, but if not then, given we're halfway through October, it means we should expect the sequel to start filming very soon. Director Scott Derrickson has posted a number of teasing images on Instagram over the last couple of months, so it seems quite likely he's been busy writing the script, and we'll hopefully get an announcement soon.

If production does start later this year, or even early 2019, then it'd position the film nicely for a 2020 release. Marvel have a gap to try and fill with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being delayed, and with three 2020 slots announced, Strange would fit nicely there. Black Widow looks like taking one of those, either May 1 or July 31, and Doctor Strange could then take the November 6 spot, which fits with when the first was released too.
