2018 was an absolutely insane year at the box office. It was a year where Black Panther soared past expectations, a Star Wars movie bombed worldwide, Venom proved itself critic-proof and Aquaman became the DCEU's highest-grossing film to date.

But these shock surprises are of course outliers in the scope of the overall box office picture, and the majority of 2018's box office hits and misses could certainly be seen coming miles off.

And now we look forward to the next 12 months of movies, where Disney will aim to become the first studio to make $10 billion in a single year, which they're pretty much guaranteed to do.

Disney's ubiquity on the movie calendar will, however, make life more difficult for competing projects, many of which will struggle to survive against the studio's aggressive marketing and nostalgic appeal.

As a result, it's reasonable to expect some especially brutal bombs over the next year, and we're classifying a bomb as a failure to double its budget (the accepted threshold for basic profitability).

Fingers are certainly crossed that at least a few of these movies might pull a surprise box office smash out of the bag, but you'd be smart to keep your expectations low regardless...
