Predicting The 10 Biggest Box Office Bombs Of 2019
10. Sonic The Hedgehog
Budget: $90 million
Box Office Prediction: $210 million (franchise prospects dead)
Sonic the Hedgehog is one of 2019's big box office question marks, but considering the lack of general audience interest in Sonic as a brand after years of low-quality video games and general IP dilution, it's tough to imagine this breaking out with the mainstream.
As for the fanbase? They've been widely mocking the less-than-stellar marketing so far, and while some will still see it out of misplaced loyalty, many will clearly stay away and wait for home video.
This isn't to forget that live-action-animated hybrid films have an incredibly spotty commercial history, and though Sonic releases on November 8 without any direct competition, its potential momentum will likely hit a brick wall once Frozen 2 comes out two weeks later.
This will probably end up the anti-Detective Pikachu: a middling family film that enrages a fair amount of the fanbase and lands indifferently with general audiences.
There's precious little chance that Sonic will fail to double its sensible $90 million budget, but if it doesn't make enough to guarantee a sequel (likely around $250 million), it'll still be a dud for all intents and purposes.
Count on it doing business much closer to 2017's Smurfs: The Lost Village ($197.2 million) than The Angry Birds Movie ($352.3 million).
