A disappointing maybe-finale to the Rambo franchise.

The belated fifth and reportedly "final" entry into the Rambo franchise hits cinemas worldwide this week - Rambo: Last Blood.

Styled as a genre-shifting finale to the series with an aged John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) returning for one last ride, the appeal speaks for itself, yet critics have largely been doling out heavily mixed reviews so far.

And with good reason. Rambo: Last Blood had the potential to be the Rocky Balboa of the action-thriller franchise, yet the end result is more of a bizarrely inconsequential, even forgettable also-ran sequel.

It certainly doesn't plumb the lazy depths of the execrable Rambo III, but that Stallone has returned to the character after over a decade and produced something so bizarrely generic is incredibly disappointing.

Does it ruin the dubious legacy of the character? Absolutely not, but it's hard to imagine the end result pleasing either those up for the usual blood-thirsty mayhem or those hoping for a slower, Logan-esque reinvention of the series...
