Back to a galaxy far, far away.

We're currently facing the longest wait for a Star Wars movie since The Force Awakens roared into cinemas and brought the franchise back to life in December 2015, with just under a year-and-a-half still to go before Episode IX lands in theatres.

Since then we've been treated to one Star Wars movie a year, but with the divisive response to 2017's The Last Jedi and the muted reception to this summer's Solo: A Star Wars Story - which so far hasn't even made $400m worldwide, despite a budget of over $250m - and a fandom that's increasingly facing criticism for being toxic (albeit a vocal minority), it's probably a good time for a decent break.

What's more, the next movie on the docket should feel like a true event. The still-untitled Episode IX will round out Disney's sequel trilogy and, in a broader sense, the story arc that goes back to Episode I. Filming is just about to get underway, so it'll be a while yet before we see a poster, trailer, or even learn what it's called, and yet even at this early stage there are plenty of key details we know about the next Star Wars movie.
