Star Wars Episode 9: Everything We Know So Far

10. J.J. Abrams Is In The Director's Chair Again

The original plan would've seen all three movies in the new trilogy having a different director: J.J. Abrams for Episode VII, Rian Johnson for VIII, and Colin Trevorrow to close things out with IX.

While things more or less went to plan with the first two (regardless of opinion on either movie), Trevorrow was fired from the project last year due to creative differences, and the project pushed back from May to December 20, 2019.

Into the breach, then, stepped Abrams, returning to finish what he started (a rare occurrence for him) as a much needed safe pair of hands. Whether or not he actually has the ability to do so is unknown, but he's a strong blockbuster director who has proven he can make a Star Wars movie, and at least has to be better than Trevorrow.
