With the honeymoon period surrounding Avengers: Infinity War starting to cool down, it's much easier to have an even-handed discussion about the merits and flaws of the Russo brothers' epic superhero tentpole.

In particular, we can figure out exactly how it stands up against the comic book team-up movie that started them all: Joss Whedon's 2012 classic, The Avengers.

While Whedon's 2015 follow-up, Avengers: Age of Ultron, is clearly the weakest of the three Avengers movies to date, the original and Infinity War meanwhile stand tall as arguably the two strongest entries into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date.

Certainly, nothing can match them in terms of scale and audience impact, but by considering each movie in every category that matters - from direction, to characters, writing and technicals - we can figure out which film rules the roost once and for all.
