When Guillermo Del Toro stepped down from the The Hobbit in 2010, there was incredible pressure from fans for the return of Peter Jackson. Having Peter Jackson direct the (at the time) two films would assuage all fears of them being anything less than brilliant. How could the man who directed The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy mess up? He couldn't - it was impossible. Flash forward five years and all three films (Jackson managed to pack in an extra film along the way) have been released. Described by prominent film critic Mark Kermode as Hobbity Tosh, it's no secret that The Hobbit Trilogy failed to live up to the mastery of The Lord Of The Rings, not just in the eyes of critics but for a huge number of fans. So what happened? There's a myriad of significant issues, like the fact that the films are unable to establish a consistent tone, are too self-consciously connected to The Lord Of The Rings, and that three films is simply too much screen time for such a slim novel.
