THE THING remake is a prequel
Whenever someone tells me they don't enjoy horror films (you will be surprised how many people I know who totally dismiss the genre), I always point them towards THE THING as my response, a perfect cornerstone of what really good horror can do. If you don't like THE THING, then I don't think there is much hope for ya! Now we have known for a long while now that a new version of THE THING has been eyed by those in the industry, sometimes we hear it's going to be an out and out remake and then later we here it's going to be a prequel. Well the latest merry-go-round for this production says PREQUEL.

Marc Abraham, out promoting his directorial debutFLASH OF GENIUSand who is producing the movie, told Latino Review... "This is more of a prequel than a sequel, there is your exclusive. Its going to be taking place in the same time frame... these are the events leading up to the 1982 film.So presumably it will delve into the origins of the shape-shifting alien and it's killings of the original Norwegian research team which pre-dates the arrival of Kurt Russell in John Carpenter's 1982 film. I guess it will be a full crew of foreign actors too. Well I must say I've always liked the idea better than a remake, if only because there is more scope to roam new avenues of narrative although at a fundamental level, it will be exactly the same movie. Group of guys being killed by THE THING, something I've seen 100% done to perfection and it's not like we don't know how it is going to end! Abraham has already produced one rare worthy remake of a classic horror film with Zack Snyder's DAWN OF THE DEAD and has been desperate in his attempts to get a new CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON made for years. The last we heard on this project was in November 2006 when Ronald D. Moore (BATTLESTAR GALATICA) was hired to pen a REMAKE and not a previously discussed sequel. God only knows the status of his involvement now.
