It was just two weeks ago that I praised the talents of Anna Faris but mourned her lack of ambition to branch out further afield to more serious minded fare (or perhaps it's a lack of casting directors being able to see what a smart performer she can be?). Now an international trailer has landed for her new movie and it does nothing but remind me of why I'm so saddened by her CV. Titled What's Your Number?, Faris plays a woman who is concerned upon hearing that the average woman who has slept with twenty man or more don't usually settle down and get married, so she decides to hunt down her exes in the hope that maybe she let 'Mr Right' get away. Lending a helping hand will be a promiscuous and hot neighbor, played by Chris Evans, and unless you've never seen a romantic comedy in your life, you can probably guess how this one is going to go. A few laughs, a few groans, an annoying voice-over, plenty of cliches and barely anything we haven't seen here a thousand times before. It's also rather heavy on the cameo-pleasing crowd who make-up her exes including; Zachary Quinto, Martin Freeman, Andy Samberg, Joel McHale and her real life husband Chris Pratt. Also turning up, rather amazingly, is Anthony Mackie. With a cast like this, we are actually surprised the movie wasn't instead made as a t.v. series as she floats from one ex to the other and I would be concerned that the film is simply going to be a generation game conveyor belt of 'and who's playing the next ex' but as mundane as that would be, at least it won't stay on one scenario for long. Directed by former Brit t.v. helmer and now U.S. small screen regular Mark Mylod (Entourage, Shameless) the movie sure does look and feel like a sitcom. 20th Century Fox will release the R-rated comedy (remember those nude images of Evans & Faris that did the rounds a while ago?) on September 30th but not until January 4th in the U.K.
