X-Men: Bryan Singer Wants A Mystique Solo Movie
Anyone else want a X-men heist flick?
Currently, the question of whether Jennifer Lawrence wishes to return to the X-Men franchise is an unresolved one. She has no contract currently (and nor do Michael Fassbender or James McAvoy), but it's inevitable that Fox will approach all three in the coming months about the next 90s set X-Men movie.
But regardless of whether Lawrence actually signs back on, there could still be a Mystique spin-off movie, according to Bryan Singer.
Talking to Empire's podcast, Singer said that the character would make for an ideal solo movie, even if she's considerably less interesting than when she was a villain.
"I think [Mystiques] right for [a solo movie], whether its Jennifer or not," said Singer. He also says she "has this different view of the world. Xavier can get into Cerebro and look at the world but hed rather just teach classes and see the beauty of mutants and humans co-existing in his mansion in Westchester. Along comes Raven with a reality check on the state of the world. It opens up a lot of avenues."
The most intriguing idea for the current timeline version of Mystique has actually already been explored in X-Men: Apocalypse (prior to her joining up with the X-Men). The sequence hinting at her being a rogue mutant rescuer, on individual missions to liberate persecuted young mutants is a great one (just as the idea of Magneto Nazi hunting in First Class deserved its own movie).
If Simon Kinberg can write a film that takes Mystqieu out of the X-Men main timeline and drop her back into that sort of role, rescuing potential new recruits (like the New Mutants) and new students for Xavier's safe haven, it could be a great film.
The issue for Lawrence of course is that that sort of film (a glorified superhero heist flick) would require her to use Mystique's shape-shifting a lot, suggesting she'd also need to be in her blue make-up for at least some of the film. She notoriously wasn't keen on that, so it might be a difficult ask.
There are lots of stories Fox could adapt with Mystique alone, but that idea is easily the most fitting and the most exciting. Plus it's the only one that would explain why she's not operating as part of the main team.
