10 Big Video Game Boss Fights That Were Total Letdowns

By Thomas James Hunt /

Though it is somewhat of a rarity nowadays, there are titles that have stuck to the tried and tested formula of concluding a chapter or level with a marvellous boss battle. Some try to raise the stakes even higher by turning an ordinary boss into some colossal towering foe. However, the majority of the time, these massive boss battles boil down to nothing more than repeatedly chipping away at the immovable wall of the moment with barely a whiff of strategy to fill your nasal cavities. Here are 10 that fall into such a category...

10. Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks €“ Malladus

Zelda and terrible boss battles go hand in hand, but none more so than the battle with Malladus from Spirit Tracks. The idea of possession is something I find incredibly interesting being an atheist, and I sort of like what Spirit Tracks was trying to achieve with the plot line. However, the battle €“ and I say "battle "incredibly loosely €“ with Malladus was nothing more than a fiery match at Wimbledon. You spend the first half protecting Zelda from flaming projectiles for what seems like thirty years, and when that fun is over, it€™s a simple case of looping round Malladus and throwing a bomb up his butt until he buggers off. It€™s not a great fight, and we€™ve played this same battle since 1986. If you ask me, saying it€™s time for a change seems redundant, but that certainly rings true here.
