10 Greatest Weapons From Worms

By Alex Antliff /

Ah, Worms. Has there ever been a game series as timeless? Though its formula hasn€™t changed since its inception in the early 90s, the franchise, which sees players take it in turns to try and strategically eliminate their opponents with the weaponry available to them, remains popular on platforms such as the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. On paper, its enduring popularity is confusing €“ why do people still wish to play a game with such a basic concept when there are much more advanced games that also involve strategy and the elimination of other players? The answer is a simple one €“ hilarity. Nothing epitomises the comedy of the series more than some of the bizarre weapons that have been included in the series over the years. Though it is possible to fight with an arsenal of conventional and practical weapons, such as bazookas, grenades, shotguns, baseball bats and even nuclear bombs, it€™s much more enjoyable to eradicate one€™s foes with the items subsequently listed in this short and sweet piece.

10. Skunk

Look at that picture. Doesn€™t he look adorable and cuddly? American readers will know that looks can be deceiving, as the pictured creature is a skunk, a mammal endemic to the Americas but not native to Europe. Though it looks harmless, it actually possesses a powerful chemical defence that it sprays from its anus (stop sniggering), which wards off predators such as bears and can cause temporary blindness in humans. In Worms, this capability can be used to the player€™s advantages, as skunks can be deployed to emit their chemicals and poison anybody that they come into contact with. Sure there are other ways to do this in the game, but this is by far the most innovative.
