What do Age of Empires, Metroid, Baldur's Gate, and Chrono Trigger have in common? They're all fantastic games that have each ensured their legacy in video game history due to their influence on the industry. Sadly, all these classic game franchises have also been somewhat forgotten in recent years. Despite many classic game franchises being consistently mentioned and referenced with rose-tinted glasses by knowledgeable gamers, it seems the industry only has a limited amount of room in the spotlight. If a franchise can't keep up with the Mario's and Zelda's of the world, they are sent straight to video game limbo. However, some game franchises have laid dormant long enough. Now is the right time to play the nostalgia card and re-introduce them to gamers once again. From Quake to Half-Life, here are 10 video game franchises that haven't had instalments in far too long, and fully deserve a modern instalment more than most.
10. Prince Of Persia
The original Prince of Persia games are infuriating, cruel, and unmerciful. In other words, they were brilliant (except for Prince of Persia 3D). The first two featured a simple 'rescue the princess' story but both had real-world stakes in the form of a timer that helped propel a sense of dread in every player. Couple that with some of the most fluid animations ever seen at the time, some great puzzles and an addictive hack and slash gameplay, and made them well received both critically and commercially. The series had a well-timed 3D reboot in the form of 2003's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The graphics and visuals were stunning, the swordplay-parkour hybrid was innovative, and the puzzles were challenging but satisfying. A couple of quick sequels followed before the series was rebooted again in 2008 with the aptly named 'Prince of Persia'. Despite the re-reboot garnering good sales and positive reviews for changing up the usual puzzling Prince of Persia gameplay by adding in open-world elements, the series was placed on hiatus. Aside from a DS release, a couple of HD-remakes and an interquel in the Sands of Time continuity, Ubisoft has given no indication of releasing a new official sequel (or probably another rebooted) Prince of Persia game anytime soon.
