10 Industry-Defining Video Games That Are Nowhere To Be Seen

9. Baldur's Gate

Before Bioware gave the world the Mass Effect games, Star Wars: KOTOR, and Star Wars: The Old Republic, they created a little RPG franchise that you may have heard of called Baldur's Gate. Playing like a high-fantasy version of Diablo with fewer demons, the first two Baldur's Gate games garnered critical acclaim for the great narrative, the sheer amount of replayability, and for having some of the best RPG graphics seen at the time. Despite the first two games being successful, Bioware had a few financial difficulties and eventually turned their attention to Star Wars instead. A couple of new developers, including the original developers of Fallout, decided to step in and a couple of console-only sequels/spin-off series were made. Despite decent critical and commercial success, the new developers also folded and what transpired next was a massive tangle of rights and legal issues that stalled the Baldur's Gate series for years. Fortunately, there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Another new developer, Overhaul Games, has taken the reins and released HD-remakes of the first two Baldur's Gate games with plans for more expansion packs. The new team has also stated that Kickstarter may be an option for a sequel after the success of other crowd-funded games, such as Wasteland 2, so a new Baldur's Gate sequel might actually happen (hopefully) one day.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
