Given the strong lasting impressions that Dark Souls' pantheon of Lords, dragons, demons and other big bads leave on those brave enough to breach the fog gates shielding their domains, it's often all too easy to let the wonders that preceded each encounter slip from memory.
Decades from now, I have no doubt that From Software's unapologetically tough series will ignite friendly (and not so friendly) debates as to which boss should go where in the subjective hierarchy of the toughest nut of them all, but let's not neglect to mention the carefully crafted environments that connect each end-of-level encounter to the next, eh?
I'd wager that many of its gothic castles, drowned cities and trap-infested haunts are considerably tougher to conquer than any knight corrupted by the Abyss. I'd also much rather take my chances with Anor Londo's wannabe Pokemon tag team than set foot in any of these nightmarish domains anytime soon.
And I've had enough of being flattened by boulders, thanks very much...
