From Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden and more, the franchise has spawned numerous fighters that have become iconic, not only to the games but across gaming itself.

Backed by one of the best storylines in the fighting game genre, these fictional characters have managed to win the hearts of millions, but in a narrative full of world-ending plots and invasions, which among them deserves to be considered the best of the best?

Here we'll be taking a look at Mortal Kombat's decade-spanning storyline and its twist and turns, to determine the most powerful Kombatants of all time. As these will discuss major plot points and backstories, a spoiler warning to those who haven't played up to Mortal Kombat 11.

10. Dark Raiden

Raiden has always been the paragon of virtue and protector of Earthrealm for years, his wisdom guiding heroes like Liu Kang and Kung Lao into victory. But despite his goodness, let's just say Raiden has made numerous errors in judgment throughout the series.

This is best seen in the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot, where Raiden's attempts at changing the timeline accidentally cause the deaths of several heroes. But in both the original timeline and in Mortal Kombat X, events transpire that transform the Thunder God into Dark Raiden.

This version of the character possesses the same abilities as regular Raiden, but without his morality to shackle him Dark Raiden is a much more formidable threat. He is more militant and ruthless, taking a more proactive approach to defending Earthrealm. We see this in Mortal Kombat 11's opening chapter where Dark Raiden takes on the army of the Netherrealm single-handedly, leading the charge against Revenant Liu Kang and Kitana.

It's a shame that after this chapter, Dark Raiden is quickly written out of the game, despite his potential.
