Unless you're playing a cosy, chilled-out indie game or walking simulator, death is a part of just about every video game, whereby players must typically slaughter fleets of the bad guys in order to progress.
These games are generally designed to make killing fun, whether by way of your awesome array of weaponry or the sheer challenge that these combatants present.
But not all games are created equal, and it's fair to say that most video game combat falls into that area of functionality that's good and fun but perhaps not terribly inspired.
These 10 video games, however, all dared to think a little outside the box, offering up enemies players couldn't wait to kill every single time they showed up.
Perhaps the feeling of putting them down was fantastic thanks to the mechanics involved or the generous weaponry at your disposal, or maybe the foes were just so damn vile and horrific that wiping them off the face of the Earth as brutally as possible brought players a huge amount of joy.
Whatever the reason, these 10 video game enemies are the ones we all relished slaughtering en masse with a slightly deranged glee...
10. Grunts - Halo
Aside from the Flood, the Grunts (aka The Unggoy) are surely Halo's most iconic enemy type. The adorable, squeaky-voiced little Covenant critters are frequently deployed as fodder to be funnelled towards the player in massive numbers.
Though easily the most charming and amusing of all the series' foes - largely by way of their hilariously terrified chit-chat while encountering Master Chief - they're at their most entertaining when on the receiving end of a headshot.
There's nothing quite like blasting a Grunt in the head and cutting their ridiculous quip off mid-sentence, and this becomes even more fun if you activate the Grunt Birthday Party skull, whereby a headshot will result in confetti exploding from the Grunt accompanied by a chorus of childlike cheering.
While on one hand the Grunts are cute and clumsy enough to almost make you feel sorry for them, a well-placed round to their face is too damn satisfying to turn down.
