When Bethesda's Doom reboot was re-announced a few years ago you could almost sense the indifference among players. After all, a new game in the franchise - then called Doom 4 - was teased almost eight years ago, and fans of the series have only repeatedly experienced disappointment since. After waiting and waiting without actually seeing anything of the game and with rumours of cancellations and complete do-overs hitting news sites every six months or so, it seemed like this reboot would be damned to development hell for all eternity.

Fortunately, Bethesda came out swinging at their E3 conference last year with an amazing, old-school gameplay demo. Showing a trailer that was less about levelling up and unlocks, and more about the sheer carnage you're able to cause with Doom's wealth of imaginative weapons, the reveal marked a potential return to form for this once-classic franchise. Blood-drenched and devastatingly brutal, in one fell swoop the trailer pretty much had fans of the franchise eating out the palm of its hand.

Now, with the the open beta for the game already under way (which if you're reading this between April 15-17, you can try out), fans have finally gotten a chance to form their own opinions.

Thankfully, it doesn't disappoint, with blisteringly fast gameplay and amazing design making it stand out as one of the most instantly gripping games of the year. While there are still plenty of anticipated titles slated for release over the next few months, if there's even one shooter out there better than Doom, then we're going to be in for an amazing year.
