No matter how long they have been gone, we will always hold out hope for their return...

There have been many great video game characters over the years, but there were some that made such an everlasting impression that they earned a permanent place in our hearts and are remembered as some of the greatest characters in gaming history.

Whether they made us feel like a total badass or were with us every step of the way in an unforgettable journey, these are the kind of characters that are just as essential to a game as its story or it's gameplay.

Sadly though, a characters popularity is not enough to guarantee they will always be around. In the crazy and often unpredictable world of video game development, there can be a number of reasons for why some of our most beloved characters are left on the sidelines to gather dust while others are allowed to take their place in the spotlight.

But some fans are left feeling like certain characters deserve a chance at a comeback because they were wronged in some way by their developers or because their return was promised long ago and they are still nowhere to be seen.

12. Duke Nukem - Duke Nukem

Duke Nukem is what happens when you decide to create one of the most masculine characters in all of gaming history and then give him an ego to match.

Despite being a mostly silent protagonist in his earlier games, Duke Nukem evolved into the wise-cracking, hyper-aggressive and politically incorrect protagonist we all know and love today. His super confident and over-the-top personality was what helped him stand out amongst the ever increasing crowd of first person shooters at the time.

In his prime, he was regarded as one of the greatest action heroes ever devised for gaming. Unfortunately though, Duke Nukem was let down hard by the horrendous flop that was Duke Nukem Forever. In a game that took four developers to finish across 14 years, the end result was an underwhelming experience that reduced Duke Nukem to a shadow of his former self.

Fans want him to return so that developers Gearbox can do right by the character by making a game worthy of his stature and potential in the shooter genre. Although his last appearance in gaming was way back in 2011, his fans are still waiting for the day when he returns for more kick-ass action and bubblegum.
