Remember the barren wasteland that was the earlier release-window of 2014? It felt as though nothing was worth investing in, let along justifying the price of your new console or graphics card of choice. The industry has kicked into gear over the past month or so though. Everything from the annually-released Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty's pad out the triple-A category along with Destiny, Evil Within and Shadow of Mordor all being recognisable next-generation efforts we've enjoyed showing off to varying degrees - providing they actually work as advertised. Indie gaming had one hell of a year in 2013 too, with the likes of Gone Home, Papers Please, Don't Starve and Rogue Legacy all proving the scene was burgeoning alongside its multi-million dollar PR budgeted brethren. So it made sense that a similar smattering of incredible titles would filter through into 2014, quite a lot of them getting lost amongst the fray as we hyped up the likes of Watch Dogs and Titanfall. It's a good job they've picked up the slack, as apart from only a couple of bigger titles making waves big enough to quell the encroaching sense of disappointment from early investors, it's over to those developers who can't afford multi-million dollar budgets to provide the best experiences we know gaming can deliver.
