In a year dominated by what a year it's been, it goes without saying that 2023 was absolutely RAMMED with quality releases.

Largely down to the sheer amount of pandemic-developed titles that were delayed, conceptualised before 2020 or - in the indie space - borne from that specific struggle and the mindset it put us in, we've had nothing less than wall to wall bangers, for 12 solid months.

Firing out the gates with Hi-Fi Rush and the Dead Space, Spring saw Resident Evil 4, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Final Fantasy's LONG-awaited Pixel Remaster collection, among many others. Summer brought Final Fantasy XVI, Street Fighter 6, Diablo IV, Pikmin 4, Remnant 2, and everything from then to now has been a hearty buffet spread of non-stop quality.

Sea of Stars, Robocop: Rogue City, Mortal Kombat 1, Baldur's Gate 3, Starfield, Alan Wake 2, Spider-Man 2. It truly was a ludicrous rollout for a generation that's struggled to define itself, finally giving millions of us reasons to invest in new hardware.

For now though, let's rank the 20 best games to pick up as the holiday sales kick in. Shout out to Dead Space, Metroid Prime Remastered, F-Zero 99 and the mighty Akka Arrh as stellar remakes, remasters and reimaginings of iconic past titles, but there can only be one best game of 2023.
