20 Essential Gaming Sequels That Must Be Announced In 2014
If even half of these games end up getting unveiled then we're going to have a lot to look forward to towards the end of the year and heading into 2015.
Much like the cinematic landscape, sequels dominate the gaming world over original IPs, and this just makes financial sense: why take a gamble on a risky new venture when you can just lean on old reliable to churn out some more cash? That said, sequels don't have to be a sign of creative bankruptcy, and regardless of where they've been in the past, these 20 games will surely find an audience when they eventually announce a sequel. We're just crossing our fingers that the time is this year. This list will not include distant hopefuls like Half-Life 3 and Shenmue 3, because they've been talked to death and there's no realistic possibility of them being announced, and similarly it won't cover games that we definitely know won't be announced for some time, such as Grand Theft Auto VI and Tekken 7. This is about games that have been hinted at or have a very realistic chance of being announced within the next 9 months. If even half of these games end up getting unveiled, and for many of them it will be in three months' time at E3, then we're going to have a lot to look forward to towards the end of the year and heading into 2015. There are so many sequels we want to see announced soon, so feel free to suggest your own in the comments!
20. Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 6 was by far the worst core Resident Evil game, a bizarrely detached, "casualised" experience which simply took the much complained about action-centric focus of the previous game and advanced it one step further. In addition to this, the three main campaigns were all far too long for the entertainment value they actually provided, resulting in a bloated experience that was a far cry away from the brilliance of earlier games in the series. Capcom are well aware of the critical and commercial disappointment of RE6 and the dismal sales of the last major release, Resident Evil: Revelations, and the company has hinted that they will be taking this on-board for the next game in the series. There's rife speculation that, due to the apparent apathy regarding the current direction of the franchise, the next game could even be a complete reboot that returns to the survival horror roots of the original. We know that the game is in development and Capcom are reportedly aiming for a 2015 release, so an unveiling over the next few months would certainly be timely.
