No time was more magical for gamers than the 90s, it was a time when games were still a little wobbly on their feet as technology fought to catch up with the grand ideas of developers. Today, graphical fidelity is astounding, but its not astounding enough to make us forget those early years where every new world was filled with exciting discoveries that we would go on to cherish for the rest of our lives. Games have a unique and powerful trick up their sleeves when it comes to connecting with an audience in a way that film, television or books simply cannot. This being the fact that the player does not simply observe a world and its story they become a part of the world and a central figure in the story. Video games afford the player levels of freedom and interaction not possible in other mediums, and so they often find themselves on a fast-track to the deepest places in our hearts, like cats and fireworks... or Shigeru Miyamoto. 21. Mario Kart 64 Block Fort Showdowns
Back in the day no one could resist the pure chaos and fun of the Block Fort battle level on Mario Kart 64. Its four multi-coloured keeps encouraged this is my land, get out! style play, and the no-mans-land below was ruthless, quickly filling up with rioting red and green shells that bounced off the walls, destroying anyone who dared tumble from the safety of the castles above. As we rode forth on our rickety little karts with three balloons in tow, signifying the life we had left to spare, we were truly happy. Truly happy that is, until someone got hold of a Super Star and started tearing their way towards you with a grin as wicked as the devil plastered upon their face.
