Although it may be one of the most recognisable gaming franchises out there - easily plucked from a lineup on that Stormtrooper-esque box art alone - there's a great many caveats you just have to put up with in comes to getting into Fallout; things that longtime fans may have otherwise overlooked or accepted. There are definitely those titles that force you to surmount their certain barrier for entry - some fans would say things like the intricacies of the world's past or the finer points of V.A.T.S.-targeting are those you'll find out along the way, as oppose to having your hand held throughout an extended introductory sequence. That being said though, even the most longtime Fallout fans must admit those first few opening hours aren't the smoothest of rides. Sure there's all manner of visual identity to soak in, and the general 'feel' of being stuck inside the vault has gone down as one of the best opening sequences of all time, but when it comes to things like mission design, the feel of weapons, quest-management etc. there are plenty of improvements worth making. It must be said that the fact Bethesda knocked it out the park so spectacularly with their first take on the mythos in 2008 is still commendable, but thanks to such an overwhelmingly positive reaction it only stacks the deck for the future, and the thousands of newcomers are going to be coming aboard for part four.
