A while ago, I wrote a list of franchises that could benefit from creating an open world game within their narrative. The item on that list that has been calling for a continuation since its inception in 2002 was item #2, namely Joss Whedon's cult masterpiece "Firefly," and on the opening run of 2013's SDCC fans have been surprised and delighted by the news that QMXi and Spark Plug Games have developed an official Firefly: Online game for tablets and smartphones (and hopefully eventually computers). One of disappointingly few enterprises that understand the weight behind the Firefly fanbase (affectionately known as Browncoats after the in-canon resistance movement against the Alliance) Andy Gore, the CEO said that At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are. It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures well, thats just too shiny for words. The game will actually incorporate several aspects that I suggested including the hiring of a crew, the acquisition of a ship and the exploration of the world. In typical MMO style, you may compete with other players, trade and barter with them and complete missions. Ships will be customizable, hopefully allowing players to pilot Firefly class vessels (otherwise what would be the point?). You can see the trailer for this release here:
