Mortal Kombat 1: 22 Biggest WTF Moments
Mortal Kombat will never be the same.
Mortal Kombat has always been shocking, and not just because of the over-the-top violence. In recent years, Ed Boon's spine-ripping beat 'em up has focused more on developing the narrative and fleshing out the ensemble. As such, some of the most defining MK moments involve the death of a beloved kombatant, a hero betraying his friends, the rebirth of a character, or the rebirth of a whole universe.
With that said, Mortal Kombat 1 might have more WTF moments than any other entry in the series. Boasting a slew of sickening finishers, hilarious Easter eggs, heart-tugging callbacks, and unexpected twists, MK veterans will find their jaw flopped on the floor during most of their playthrough. And since this instalment is a reboot, key figures have been massively reinvented, which is sure to catch fans off-guard.
Of course, it's not all good news. There are some dubious performances, anticlimactic showdowns, and questionable graphics that will leave gamers scratching their heads, wondering how developers thought they were up to standard.
For better or for worse, these 22 moments in Mortal Kombat 1 left everyone utterly blindsided.

22. Kronika Is Alive??
Mortal Kombat 11 concluded with Raiden giving his divine power to Liu Kang, turning the Shaolin Monk into the God of Fire. After defeating Kronika, Liu Kang became the Keeper of Time, allowing him to recreate the realms as he sees fit. Because Titans can not be resurrected, Kronika should be gone for good.
However, MK1 throws a curveball straight off the bat. In the prologue, we see Liu Kang has turned Shang Tsung into a street huckster, to ensure his arch-nemesis will pose no threat in this new timeline.
While peddling fraudulent tonics to passer-by, Shang Tsung encounters a mysterious woman, who promises him unlimited power if he joins her. Although this person's name is not given, all signs point to her being Kronika.
How did she survive? How did Kronika go undetected for so long in this new timeline? What does she want?
Though there's more at play here than it seems, these questions aren't answered until much later.
