After five years of licking their wounds and having a real good think about the state of the franchise, Capcom have revitalised Resident Evil in truly landmark fashion. Gone is the overly campy tone and focus on action set-pieces, and in is a considered story with perfect pacing, a solid selection of detestable antagonists and an all-new first-person camera angle to hang with the likes of Outlast and P.T.
Across the board you can tell Capcom needed its marquee, somewhat legendary IP to have a good showing, and as such, RE7's gameplay is a return to the corridor-crawling, item-hoarding delights of the old school. There's not been a Resident Evil quite like this since its first sequel, but that means obfuscation is also back in force.
