Insomniac might be gearing up to deliver one of the finest comic book games this generation, but there are a whole load of pitfalls they had to avoid along the way.

While Spider-Man himself has largely navigated the gaming medium unscathed, he has been the victim of some massive blunders over the years. Let us not forget that superhero games went either one of two ways before Batman: Arkham came around, and with cheap movie tie-ins a constant presence throughout the 2000s, Spider-Man - much like his other costumed cohorts - did fall to the occasional dud.

Doing so may have actually worked to Insomniac's advantage however; with over two decades' worth of titles to improve upon, the amount of flaws, failures and mistakes have surely made an impression.

There are of course lessons to be learned by franchise competitors, but in creating the definitive Spidey title, taking a walk down memory lane and looking at the character's worst gaming exploits is a necessary - if not painful - task to go about.
