With the gargantuan success of last year’s Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, it was only logical that Sony capitalised on the success of the weaponised nostalgia and revived Crash’s PlayStation brother, Spyro the Dragon.

As with the Crash compilation, Spyro’s first three PSOne adventures have been remastered in glorious high definition for the PlayStation 4 - albeit with many differences that show Activision were paying attention to the reception from the first time around. For one, Spyro is available right away on both the PS4 and Xbox One, whereas Crash waited almost a year to appear on the Microsoft console. However, Spyro - unlike Crash - is not currently out on the Nintendo Switch, though a port in the near future is not an unreasonable expectation.

The first three Spyro games were essentially very simple platforming games with a big focus on collectables. Each area is different, and has interesting quirks to explore and discover. Even the hub worlds have collectables and enemies to keep us amused. All this means the game shines brightest for those who are looking for a simple yet highly entertaining premise.

The three games are all pretty similar, with small mechanical changes and different playable characters being introduced for the third instalment. As each of the trio takes just under 10 hours to beat, there's a particular incentive to 100% them. And people who love this sort of game won't hesitate to do so.
